HOW TO DRAIN AND CLEAN A HOT TUB

Hot tub maintenance for the most part is fairly easy - if properly sanitized, the hot tub will essentially keep itself clean.  We do recommend that twice per year, you drain and clean your hot tub to ensure proper water balance, and overall working order of your hot tub.  Generally, the start of the spring season and the fall season are great times to perform this maintenance, as these tend to be the times of year that you will most likely utlize the hot tub the most.  Another good time to do a drain and clean is after a large bather load / party.  These types of events tend to cause cloudy hot tub water, and a drain and clean can be the most efficient way to get your water back in line.
We have attached a short video below demonstrating the steps our service technicians take on drain and clean hot tub calls they perform - this is definitely something you can do on a weekend if you prefer the DIY route.  A bullet point list is also included for a quick reference guide.
  • Turn off hot tub at the breaker
  • Drain the hot tub either using the drain spout or siphon the water out with a hose
  • Wipe down all surfaces of the hot tub with a non-abrasive cleaner and soft rag - we use a product called Clear & Perfect
  • Remove the filter cartridge and clean with a high pressure hose nozzle, acid wash, or replace the filter if necessary
  • Rinse surface of the hot tub to remove any residue from the cleaner and drain this water from the hot tub
  • Refill the hot tub - note that if you refill the hot tub through the skimmer, it will aid in avoiding air lock on your pump
  • Reset breaker and turn hot tub back on
  • Turn all pumps on and test all diverter valves - allow pumps to run for several minutes
  • If your pump became air locked during the process, turn pump on high and allow to run for 5 minutes, then turn off - repeat this 3-4 times
  • Test your water and adjust chemicals accordingly - this is a great time to replace all Frog cartridges if applicable
  • Wipe down the hot tub cover with a leather/vinyl protectant to help protect your cover from weather exposure - we recommend 303 Aerospace Protectant - it is available in wipes or spray
  • Enjoy!

9 HOT TUB SUPPLIES WE CAN'T LIVE WITHOUT

There seems to be a common mis-conception about how much it truly costs to maintain a hot tub. To alleviate any concerns over the amount of money you may have to spend to keep your hot tub in good condition, we developed a list of 9 products that are a must, but most of these will last you at least 6 months to a year (and a few are optional!).
1. Test strips or a test kit – this is invaluable as it will help you keep your hot tub water clean & clear and help to avoid any skin irritation from your water. A test kit will last longer than test strips, and allows for more in depth testing, however, the test strips are great for convenience.
2. Defoamer this is an item that will definitely be necessary when you first start using your hot tub, or definitely if you have guests over. We tend to under-estimate how much laundry soap actually remains on our clothing, so if you have recently washed your bathing suit, or have a large group of people using the hot tub, you will definitely want to add a capful of this prior to getting in the hot tub. A bottle of this product should last quite a while, as you will only add a capful at a time.
3. Chemical Sanitizer – whether your hot tub calls for bromine tabs, granulated chlorine after each use, or a Frog Cartridge, you will want to make sure you have this on hand the day you fill up your hot tub, and administer as directed by your hot tub dealer. There is nothing more frustrating to get ready for a soak in your hot tub, only to find it has turned green because you didn’t have your sanitizer ready to go…
4. pH Up – Your hot tub’s pH is vital for your water to be kept clean and clear and to keep your water from being corrosive or building up scale. You will want to maintain a pH reading of 7.2 – 7.8, and add pH Up if your pH becomes too low. Low pH is referred to as acidic and makes your hot tub water corrosive, which is one of the last things you want with hot tub water, as it will wreak havoc on your heater and equipment.
5. pH Down – As discussed above, keeping your pH at the proper reading is imperative for maximum hot tub enjoyment – water with a pH reading greater than 7.8 tends to cause cloudy water and scale to develop. A high pH level will also reduce the effectiveness of your chlorine sanitizer.
6. Alkalinity Increaser – Your hot tub water’s alkalinity reading tells you if your water can resist changes to the pH that are caused by your sanitizer of choice. Water alkalinity acts as a buffer, so if sanitizers are added that would normally cause pH to move up or down, these changes are controlled and do not result in significant fluctuations in your pH. You want to maintain a total alkalinity reading of 80 – 150 ppm, higher is ok, but you want to stay under 200.
7. Extra Filter (optional) most portable hot tubs today utilize cartridge filters. Depending on usage, you will want to clean your filter every 3 – 6 months, which simply consists of taking the filter out and rinsing with a high pressure nozzle on your hose, or, for very dirty filters, soaking in a mixture of muriatic acid and water. While not a necessity, it is handy to have a secondary filter on hand to put in the hot tub while you are cleaning the first filter – that way you are not rushed and aren’t leaving the hot tub high and dry with no filtration if you are called away in the middle of your cleaning.
8. Cover protectant If your hot tub sits in direct contact with the outside elements and is not fully covered by a porch or patio, you will want to invest in a cover protectant spray or wipes – this product helps maximize the life of your cover in the harsh environment the sun causes. You only need to apply this product every 4 – 6 months, so one purchase will last a while.
9. Cover lifter (optional) – while this is not a vital hot tub supply, we find it to be an invaluable asset. Hot tub covers are heavy, and for any females out there like me, that enjoy the occassional (or frequent) hot tub soak by themselves, being able to get the hot tub cover on and off easily is a necessity!
Most of these items will be included with your initial hot tub purchase, and will last you at least the first 6 months of hot tub ownership, if not much longer, leaving you more time to focus on relaxing and enjoying your new purchase!

THREE UNDERRATED WAYS HOT TUBS CAN BRING YOUR FAMILY CLOSER TOGETHER

With technology today and the ever constant demand on everyone’s time, it’s no wonder there are articles posted daily on the detriments of distracted parenting, distracted ‘spousing’ as I will call it, or just over-whelming yourself to the point of putting your own health and mental well-being in jeopardy…
I see more and more articles on how to set boundaries for yourself, disconnect from technology, and schedule in ‘white space’, in an effort to allow for everyone to simply take a breath and enjoy what is going on in the present.
There are a variety of lists and solutions offered from technology free dinners to date nights and family game nights.
I have another recommendation that isn’t often thought of, but provides a solution to spending quality time as a family, as a couple, or even just for yourself – a hot tub!
I know you're most likely rolling your eyes at this suggestion, but from personal experience, I can vouch for the quality time a hot tub can provide.
Starting with simply putting down the technology—the hot tub solves this one immediately given that water and smart phones simply don’t coexist well.
From the moment you dip your toe in the water, technology disappears immediately.
I have personally experienced what no distractions can get you from your spouse or kids, ages ranging from 4 – 18, and the amount of connection that can be made in a 30-minute soak is amazing.

How a Hot Tub Helped Us Hear More From Our Teenager in 30 Minutes than in the Past 30 Days

Starting with teenagers, since that seems to be the hot topic with connecting, I have 2 step-children, 1 boy, and 1 girl.
We had a hot tub when they were in the pre-teen years and through their teenage years, and I can honestly say the information my husband and I got during 30 minutes of hot tub time was more than we previously heard in an entire month of trying to find out how life was going.
We didn’t even have to ask the dreaded question of ‘How was your day?’ – simply being in the hot tub with them and allowing them a ‘safe space’ to talk was all that was needed.
We rarely asked questions, just simply listened, and each subsequent visit to the hot tub gleaned more information about what was troubling them, how school was going, what their views on things were, and what type of person they were becoming.
An added bonus – we became the ‘go-to house’ during the winter months, and when you get a group of teenagers together, they are just as chatty as toddlers – with a wealth of insight into what they were dealing with, which helped us get a handle on what topics we really needed to make sure we talked to our kids about.

Eliminating Distractions to Connect With Your Younger Kids

My husband and I also have younger kids together – 2 girls age 4 & 7. We all know that getting kids to talk at this age is not a problem, but I have found hot tub time offers a very different experience. (Please note that my husband and I are aware of safety concerns with younger kids and hot water and therefore we do not let them in a hot tub with water above 98 degrees and never for longer than 20 minutes at a time.)
Our girls see the hot tub as a time when they know they have our undivided attention, and therefore, they put on a show for us! Dancing to the music, singing, and just simply being kids, with no inhibition whatsoever. They do all of these things in the house as well, but I will admit, they don’t always get 100% of my attention in the house with competing factors like laundry and dishes, but in the hot tub, none of that exists and my husband and I can simply enjoy their playfulness.

How a Simple Soak can Help Rekindle The Flame With Your Spouse

Finding time to connect with your spouse is, I’m sure, on a list of things to ‘do better’, but things always seem to take priority. This past winter, my husband and I made it a point to get in the hot tub every night, just the two of us – generally after the kids were in bed. We can definitely be the married couple that simply coexists in a space, and I will admit, allow screen time to monopolize most downtime when it is just the two of us.
What happened this past winter though was very different. I found us talking to each other, undistracted by bells and dings, or tv shows, for a solid 30 minutes or more each night. We got back to the conversations you have prior to having kids – goals, dreams, plans for the future, etc.all the things you talk about and ponder as a young 20-something, but once you have kids, get put on the back-burner.
It was enlightening to hear how my husband’s goals and plans for his career or what he wants to do as the kids get older, had changed since we got married and actually had the kids. And it was refreshing to actually think about those things myself, instead of the normal routine of keeping up with kid’s schedules, Dr. appts., lunches, homework, etc.

Can a Hot Tub Really Help Your Family Connect?

I’m not proposing a hot tub is the solution for everyone, but it is definitely an option worth considering.
While technology free dinners sound great in theory, and we can all strive to achieve those, with after school activities and competing schedules, having a technology free hot tub gathering with your family or spouse every night before bedtime, might be more attainable, and may not get the eye rolls the dinner table always seems to get!
Plus, added bonus – no dishes!

HOW TO MAINTAIN A FLAWLESS HOT TUB IN LESS THAN 10 MINUTES EACH MONTH

One of the most frequent questions that comes up around the purchase of a hot tub is ‘How much time is it going to take to maintain?’, or ‘How much am I going to spend on maintenance?’.
To be honest with you, as a busy mom of two that works full time, if I honestly look at a hot tub purchase, not from the stance of someone that works in the industry, I would totally be one of those people…
Who has the time to add even 1 more thing into their day to check on, take care of, keep up with?
However, since I am in the industry, I understand the benefits that come along with hot tub ownership, so I haven’t spent a lot of time thinking about it from the other side, and really understanding this primary concern.
I want to address this concern with all the busy mom’s and dad’s, homeowners, workaholics, grandparents and health aficionados and discuss the reality of hot tub maintenance.

Can you really get by with just 1 hour of upkeep?

I can tell you, we have owned our newest hot tub for about 9 months now, and between myself and my husband, we have probably spent a combined total of 1 hour of time on the maintenance of our hot tub, and approximately $55 in chemicals in addition to what was provided with the actual hot tub purchase (our tub came with a fairly substantial set of ‘opening chemicals’ that was a part of the purchased kit).
The time spent was primarily my husband cleaning out the filter—he has done this 3 times in total now, basically once a quarter. This process requires nothing more than a hose and a high-pressure nozzle attached to the hose…you simply hose the dirt and dust off until the filter is white again.
Some people like to be uber clean and will perform a more extensive cleaning of their hot tub filter. They will purchase a secondary filter to use as a backup and will rotate the two filters to allow for more in depth cleaning. They will take the used filter out and will acid wash it (basically soaking in a muriatic acid/water rinse), and will use their backup filter while acid washing the first one.
If you are a person that enjoys that feeling of knowing you have gotten things as clean as possible, this may be the route for you, but in all actuality, it isn’t vital. If you choose this route, you will have the expense of approximately $50 - $100 for the backup filter (depending on your hot tub model), and the cost of the muriatic acid, which costs about $7.50 / gallon.

How much should you expect to pay for chemical costs?

As far as the chemical cost – most of this went to replacement Frog Bromine cartridges. We have found that if we change the Frog cartridge every 3-4 weeks on the dot, our water stays crystal clear. Note that our hot tub is equipped with ozone that runs 24 hours a day, which does most of the water sanitation.

Our start-up kit that was included with our purchase included 3 of these cartridges – we have purchased an additional 3 cartridges at $15/each. This only accounts for 6 months of use with the math I provided, so to clarify, we don’t use the tub much in the summer as it is our busiest time at work, and the kids prefer to get in the pool vs. the hot tub, so we haven’t changed the cartridge since May – I looked and the water is still crystal clear, going 3 months without spending a dime. Keep in mind, there was NO USE of the hot tub during this time period though!!

The other $10 in chemical cost was for the second bottle of defoamer. With our kids’ bathing suits being washed frequently, they tend to cause some bubbles in the hot tub, so we went through the provided bottle of defoamer in the first 4 months, and are working our way through the second bottle now.

The bottom-line for everyday hot tub maintenance

In taking an honest look at the time and cost of maintenance for our hot tub, I can say for us it hasn’t been a huge money pit or time sucker…purchasing a hot tub with a primary sanitizer of ozone is probably vital to our success with low maintenance cost/time spent.
One caveat I would say from the ‘industry’ perspective is that our hot tub sits under a covered patio that gets little to no direct sunlight, so we haven’t had to spend any time or money on maintenance for the cover, which at this point would simply be applying a protective product to it to keep it from fading.
If your hot tub were going to be sitting in the direct sunlight, I would recommend a protective sealer for your cover be applied at the beginning of spring and again at the beginning of fall – this would take about 15 minutes to do max.
Also, going into the spring season in Oklahoma, I would have a sheet of plywood on hand to cover up the hot tub cover during hail storms…That $25 plywood investment could wind up saving you a cost of a new cover at $400!

DESTINATION WATER SAFETY

We conclude our water safety recommendations in honor of National Water Safety month, with water safety at destination locations.  Pool and hot tub water safety at resorts are the same as previously mentioned, but other destinations such as lakes and beaches come with additional safety precautions.

  • Lakes and rivers are especially dangerous due to murky water conditions and sometimes fast moving water flow, therefore, effective supervision is critical.
  • Make sure to have a rope and throw a ring on your boat at all times that are ready to be used at a moment's notice.
  • If you are boating with small children, do not allow them to sit in the front of the boat - unexpected wake and choppy water can propel small children out of the boat.
  • Account for everyone that should be aboard the boat BEFORE starting the engine.
  • Coast Guard regulations require children always wear a life jacket when on a boat - make sure to test your kid's life jacket to ensure proper fit before going out on the boat.
  • At the beach, make sure to stay within 10 feet of your child as waves and undertows can happen in an instant and will most likely catch your child off guard.  Keep kids in knee depth water or less, as large waves will easily be over their head.
  • When you are at the beach, dress your child in bright colors so they are easier to spot in a crowd and take a picture of your child in their clothes/bathing suits for the day to have with you in case they become lost.
  • Make sure to know your location points at the beach and identify the lifeguard tower if one is present at the beach you are visiting.  Check in with the lifeguard about current conditions of the water before going in so you know what to expect.
  • Don't forget to have a cell phone handy for emergencies.
  • Remember sun protection at destination locations!  Sunblock should be applied 30 minutes before swimming and re-applied every 45 minutes to an hour if you are in the water.  Remember, the further south you go, the stronger the sun gets, and don't forget about eye protection for your kiddos - make sure they are using UV protection sun glasses!

Have a fun and safe summer!

HOT TUB SAFETY

As May is National Water Safety Month, we want to take a minute to continue on with water safety tips & reminders - today, focusing on Hot Tub Water Safety.  Hot tubs are very intriguing to young kids - warm water with jets, bubbles, water falls, lights and music - what more could a kid ask for!??  However, hot tubs can be an accident waiting to happen.  If you have a hot tub in your backyard, or are visiting a friend or vacationing somewhere with a hot tub, keep these safety guidelines in mind:

  • Make sure to keep the water temperature below 100 degrees for small children - kids are more susceptible to dehydration, over-heating, and heat-related illness; their body temperature simply cannot adjust to the hot water temperatures in the same manner an adults' can.
  • Limit time in the hot tub to 10 minutes or less and watch your kids - if their face begins to turn red or they complain of nausea or dizziness, take them out of the hot tub immediately and apply a cold compress to their forehead.
  • Keep the jets off while small children are enjoying the water.  Although the bubbles are enticing, the jets cause currents, and depending on the hot tub, these currents can become very strong and be dangerous for kids, forcing them to lose their balance or not be able to get their head above the water.  Bubbles from the hot tub jets also drastically reduce visibility in the hot tub, not allowing you to see what may be happening under the surface of the water.
  • When the hot tub is not in use, make sure to secure the cover with a latch that locks or cover clips - also, ensure you are utilizing a hard top cover.
  • Find a way to prevent your kids from using the hot tub controls - once they discover how to turn the jets on, they will, whether you are there to supervise or not.
  • To defend against entrapment, ensure the hot tub has a VGB compliant drain cover and make sure to inspect the drain cover regularly to ensure it is in place and is not broken.

Enjoy your summer trips / vacations - just remember your water safety!

SWIMMING POOL & HOT TUB WATER SAFETY

May is National Water Safety Month, so a great time to pause and remember the basic pool and hot tub water safety recommendations before summer swimming gets in full swing!  A few reminders for swimming pool / hot tub water safety - even if you don't have a pool or hot tub in your backyard, chances are you will visit one at some point during the summer!
  • Stay close; be alert; watch children around the pool - Never leave children alone in the pool (or hot tub) and watch your child when they are playing around the water.  Kids have a fascination with water, and it only takes a split second for a fun play day to turn into a nightmare.
  • Always keep a telephone close by when you and your family are using a pool or hot tub in case of emergencies.
  • If your child goes 'missing', always check the pool or hot tub first.
  • Learn how to perform CPR on both kids and adults and make sure to update those skills regularly.  Local Fire Departments or YMCA's will often offer multiple classes throughout the course of the year.
  • Understand basic life-saving techniques so you can assist in a pool emergency.
  • Keep children away from pool and hot tub drains, pipes or any openings to avoid entrapment.  If they are playing games to retrieve diving sticks or toys from the bottom, make sure to direct toys away from any drains.
As we all know, the #1 most effective water safety recommendation is supervision - it is the most critical line of defense in preventing drowning or water accidents.  In this day and age of constant interruptions, make sure you are focused on your kiddos while they are in the water - it only takes a second, and no text, phone call, or Facebook update is worth it!  Have a safe and fun summer at the pool!

Planning for New Patio Furniture

There are several factors to think about when you are purchasing patio furniture. You first have to answer this question:  'Are you buying something that to get you through the season or are you buying something that will last you for years to come?' There are always relatively inexpensive options at the local home improvement or big box store, but when you get them home it seems like they will blow off your patio with the next gust of wind, and only seem to last one, if you’re lucky, two seasons before the cushions are deteriorated and the patterns faded from the sun. If you are looking for a short term solution the home improvement store option may be the one for you. On the other hand, if you are looking for the patio furniture you want to complete your outdoor oasis, you’re most likely looking for furniture that is durable, comfortable, and made to last for many years to come.

When you start shopping for higher quality patio furniture that is going to last for years, it’s very clear that prices can seem to be pretty high relative to the home improvement store patio furniture; even to the furniture you purchased for your living room. That being said, ask yourself this, 'Would you ever consider putting the couch you purchased for your living room outside on your patio? How long would your living room furniture last outside?' Most likely your answer would be absolutely not, it wouldn’t last a week out in the elements. Good patio furniture is made to withstand the outdoor environment for years.

One of the things to look for in good patio furniture is durable frame material. Whether that be metal, wicker or plastic, you are looking for something that will stand up to power washing at the beginning of each season to knock off the dust and dirt that has accumulated, something that has enough weight to it that you aren’t concerned about it blowing away during the first spring thunderstorm, and something that will not deteriorate with the UV of the sun.

Another thing to look for is quality cushions. There really is no better outdoor fabric than Sunbrella. It comes in an endless variety of colors and patterns, and is UV resistant so fading isn’t a problem. When it comes to the cushion itself you want to look for something that is firm enough to hold its shape over time (nobody likes a pancake for a cushion), and something that has the ability to drain and dry. Since we are talking about patio furniture there is a strong possibility that at some point it will rain, and the worst thing is going outside two days after a rain shower when it’s sunny and beautiful to enjoy your relaxing outdoor oasis and finding yourself with a soggy bottom.

When looking at dinning sets there are few things to consider as well. The first being the table-we talked about the weight of furniture earlier, but it is very crucial in the table. Solid top lightweight tables have a tendency to become dangerous sails in high wind situations, which are generally common occurrences in Oklahoma. One suggestion is to look for a heavier weight table that isn’t solid, like a cast iron table with a weave pattern or cut outs. Just make sure they can pass the “wine glass test.” Crimson Casual for example, makes tables with cutouts and they are so level that no matter where you set your glass of wine, it will not tip over! (Very important for patio enjoyment!)

The other thing to consider in dinning sets is the style of chairs. Many sets are shown with two swivel rocker chairs at the head of the table and standard stationary chars around the table. Most patio settings are casual. Most likely your dinning set will be a multi-function area for eating as well as socializing and relaxing. A recommendation to consider is to upgrade all of your chairs to swivel rockers so there is no fighting over the head chairs and everyone can enjoy. There are also different heights of chairs. There is chat height, dinning height and bar height. Make sure you are aware of the height of the table you are looking at when you look for chairs to make sure you get the appropriate height.

As you can see we expect a lot out of our patio furniture. If done right patio furniture can provide years of enjoyment and comfort. There is definitely more upfront cost for quality furniture, but it is, without a doubt, worth it!
